United Nations University Invents Machine to Recycle Plastics into Car Oil (Video)

April 3, 3015, www.facebook.com

This is a great invention. Yes, I think we should find a different alternative to power than oil and gasoline but this, I think, is a decent small stepping stone. At least this will help with the plastic problem for the time being!

Google invests $300 million in U.S. residential solar projects

February 26, 2015, www.yahoo.com | “SolarCity Corp on Thursday said it created a $750 million fund to finance about 25,000 residential solar projects, with Google Inc investing nearly half the funding.  The money will be used by SolarCity to put solar panels on homes. Homeowners then will pay a monthly fee to lease the panels from the company. The growth of such financing has made generating electric power from the sun an option for households who do not want to shell out the $20,000 to $30,000 upfront cost of a typical residential solar system.”

Meet the First U.S. City to Run on 100% Renewable Electricity

Meet the First U.S. City to Run on 100% Renewable ElectricityFebruary 13, 2015, www.care2.com | “Burlington, Vermont is that state’s largest city, with a population of 42,000 people. It describes itself as “forward-thinking” which is what you’d expect from a city that once elected Senator Bernie Sanders as its mayor. So it’s no surprise that it recently became the first U.S. city of any decent size to run entirely on renewable electricity.”

7 Cities That Are Starting To Go Car-Free

January 13, 2015, www.fastcoexist.com | “Urban planners are finally recognizing that streets should be designed for people, not careening hunks of deadly metal.  After over a hundred years of living with cars, some cities are slowly starting to realize that the automobile doesn’t make a lot of sense in the urban context. It isn’t just the smog or the traffic deaths; in a city, cars aren’t even a convenient way to get around.”

My edible classroom gives deprived New York kids a reason to attend school

Stephen Ritz working on vertical planters with studentsAugust 20, 2014, www.theguardian.com | “Stephen Ritz is a teacher in New York’s deprived South Bronx district where he began a pioneering project to farm plants and vegetables indoors at Discovery High School. The school’s so-called “edible walls” gave birth to the Green Bronx Machine, a project that helps other schools in the US start their own agricultural programmes to teach children healthy eating, environmental awareness and life skills. As well as continuing his educational work in New York, Stephen travels the world promoting the value of growing fresh produce, both in schools and the wider community.”

More Cities Jump on the Food Forest Bandwagon

July 9, 2014, www.takepart.com | “For food-loving travelers, stopping at the farmers market or a local food-minded restaurant is a requisite part of visiting a new city. But as you travel this summer, know that in some cases you may not have to enter a shop or even get out your wallet to enjoy the local bounty. That’s because an increasing number of cities are building edible landscapes—trees and plants bearing fruit, nuts, and even spices—right into the cityscape.”
