San Diego sues Monsanto for bay pollution & persistent contamination

Reuters/Kate Munsch

March 17, 2015, http://rt.com/usa | “According to the San Diego Reader, city agencies filed suit on Monday, alleging Monsanto hid its knowledge of the toxicity of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs). Despite being aware of these facts, the company peddled its chemical compounds for industrial use, including shipbuilding, electrical component manufacture, food packaging and paint plasticizers.”

Monsanto, despite knowing how harmful it was to people and environment, has continued to produce PCBs (polychlorinated biphenyls). The City of San Diego and the San Diego Unified Port District has sued Monsanto for continuing to produce PCBs (polychlorinated biphenyls) despite how harmful it is to people and the environment. PCBs have also been illegal in the United States since 1979.

The City of San Diego is Suing Monsanto for Poisoning its Marine Life and Polluting its Bay

March 17, 2015, althealthworks.com | “The Monsanto Company produces a large volume of different chemicals, and many of them are also manufactured by competitors. But when it comes to the dangerously carcinogenic PCBs that have wreaked havoc on towns and waterways across the country, Monsanto stands (virtually) alone: 99 percent of PCB production in the United States was done by the agricultural giant according to this report from the Food & Water Watch.”

Why conservationists need a little hope: saving themselves from becoming the most depressing scientists on the planet

August 19, 2014, news.mongabay.com | “Here’s a challenge: take a conservationist out for a drink and ask them about their work. Nine times out of ten—or possibly more—you’ll walk away feeling frustrated, despondent, and utterly hopeless. You’ll hear about rainforests being chopped down for palm oil or chopsticks; or a just-discovered species that probably just went extinct; or a government that is worse than ambivalent: corrupt; or a shadowy corporation that’s doing some horrific thing to ecosystems and local people just to make greedy shareholders happy.”

Here’s a great article about why to support the kind of cheerleading that we do at Good News for the Earth —

Exxon to Face Criminal Charges for 50,000+ Gallon Fracking Wastewater Spill

January 3, 2014, ecowatch.com | “Exxon Mobil Corp. subsidiary XTO Energy will have to face criminal charges for allegedly dumping tens of thousands of gallons of fracking waste at a Marcellus Shale drilling site in 2010, according to a Pennsylvania judge’s ruling on Thursday.  Following a preliminary hearing, Magisterial District Judge James G. Carn decided that all eight charges against Exxon—including violations of both the state Clean Streams Law and the Solid Waste Management Act—will be “held for court,” meaning there is enough evidence to take the fossil fuel giant to trial over felony offenses.”

BOOK REVIEW – Another call for the Rights of Nature, as adopted by Bolivia

November 20, 2013, www.amazon.com | “Environmental law has failed us all. As ecosystems collapse across the globe and the climate crisis intensifies, environmental agencies worldwide use their authority to permit the very harm that they are supposed to prevent. Growing numbers of citizens now realize they must act before it is too late. This book exposes what is wrong with environmental law and offers transformational change based on the public trust doctrine.”

BOOK REVIEW – Another call for the Rights of Nature, as adopted by Bolivia … and where else?

“Propelled by populist impulses and democratic imperatives, Nature as a public trust surfaces at epic times in history as a manifest human right. But until now it has lacked the precision necessary for citizens, government employees, legislators, and judges to fully safeguard the natural resources we rely on for survival and prosperity.”

Obama Thanks Europe For Leading On Climate Change

June 19, 2013, www.buzzfeed.com | “President Barack Obama told a crowd in Berlin Wednesday that Germany is leading the fight against climate change. In the midst of his big speech at the Brandenburg Gate, Obama took a moment to give a shout-out to his hosts for their efforts in an area that’s still extremely politically controversial in America.”

This part of Obama’s message looks like it’s not going away!
“For the sake of future generations, our generation must move toward a global compact to confront a changing climate before it is too late.

Belize Court Protects Barrier Reef from Unsafe Oil Drilling

April 18, 2013, ens-newswire.com | “In a case brought by environment groups, Belize’s Supreme Court has declared offshore oil drilling contracts issued by the Government of Belize in 2004 and 2007 null and void. The ruling halts the Belizean government’s immediate effort to allow offshore oil drilling in the Meso American Reef, the world’s second largest barrier reef.”

To call attention to this issue, Oceana organized the nation’s first ever “People’s Referendum” on February 29, 2012 in which 29,235 people – out of Belize’s population of 350,000 – came from all over the country to cast their votes.
