American Medical Association Calls for Public Disclosure of Fracking Chemicals

June 11, 2015, boldnebraska.org | “The American Medical Association, the largest U.S. association of physicians with over 210,000 members, this week called for full public disclosure of the toxic mix of chemicals used in the process of fracking.  Concerned about the inability to effectively monitor and track possible long term public health and environmental changes associated hydraulic fracturing, physicians today voted to adopt policy supporting the full disclosure of chemicals placed into the environment during the petroleum, oil and natural gas exploration and extraction process.”

The U.N. surprises everyone with a breakthrough deal to slow deforestation

June 11, 2015, grist.org | “A surprise deal emerged from U.N. climate negotiations in Bonn, Germany, this week: Diplomats managed to reach a key agreement to compensate developing nations that agree to preserve their forests. And environmental and civil society groups had generally nice things to say about the deal.”

It’s not often that happy, unexpected news emerges from climate negotiations, but that’s exactly what happened at a meeting in Germany this week.

North American scientists call for end to tar sands mining

June 10, 2015, www.theguardian.com | “More than 100 leading US and Canadian scientists called for a halt on future mining of the tar sands, saying extraction of the carbon-heavy fuel was incompatible with fighting climate change.  In a letter published on Wednesday, the researchers said tar sands crude should be relegated to a fuel of last resort, because it causes so much more carbon pollution than conventional oil.”

Maryland bans fracking

June 1, 2015, thehill.com | “Maryland’s ban on hydraulic fracturing became law after Gov. Larry Hogan (R) decided not to veto it.  The bill bans fracking for two and a half years, and requires the state to write standards to regulate the practice for when the ban lifts.  Maryland is the second state in recent months to ban fracking. New York recently filed the final paperwork to ban fracking, as Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D) pledged last year.”

Fracking Ban In Maryland Will Go Into Law After Republican Governor Refuses To Veto

Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan.May 29, 2015, thinkprogress.org | “At the end of the day on Friday, Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan will become the first-ever Republican governor to allow a statewide moratorium on fracking.  A two-year ban on the natural gas extraction technique passed overwhelmingly in both houses of the state General Assembly earlier this year, and last weekend, Hogan announced that that he would not veto the bill. However, Hogan also said he wouldn’t sign the bill, instead simply allowing it to automatically become law under time restrictions for signing or vetoing. That time restriction expires at the end of the day on Friday.”

Oil And Gas Giant BP Cuts Ties With Conservative Group ALEC

March 24, 2015, thinkprogress.org | “BP did not point to any particular issues behind its defection. In recent years ALEC, whose members include Republican politicians as well as businesses, has been behind ‘model legislation’ to limit renewable energy in states. The group has also condemned the Environmental Protection Agency’s proposed Clean Power Plan, and fought against the Affordable Care Act.”

 Robert Brothers
It is not sure whether BP broke ties because of ALEC’s views on denial of global warming or not, but it is becoming increasinly unpopular to back companies that are climate change deniers.

North Carolina is a gas-rich state so stopping fracking is going to be an enormous challenge.

Activists Destroy Road Leading to Elliott Forest Timber Sale

March 22, 2015, earthfirstjournal.org | “But for those of us who are intimately connected to this land, a clearcut is a clearcut. No matter if the trees are 100 or 250 years old: the mountain beavers will be trampled, trapped and poisoned and the coho salmon downstream will struggle to survive as temperatures rise and silt settles on the gravel beds.”

 Robert Brothers

Activists create a three foot deep trench to prevent Scott Timber from clear cutting. They activists want to protect the Murrelet nesting habitat, the salmon from the temperatures rise and silt settles on the gravel beds, the mountain beavers in Elliot, Oregon.

How Indigenous Kayactivists Protest Against Shell

The Lummi Youth Canoe leads kayaktivists to shores the Duwamish people used to inhabit for thousands of years. ALEX GARLAND

May 19, 2015, www.popularresistance.org | “Saturday’s action against the towering Arctic drilling rig now squatting in the port’s Terminal 5—originally Duwamish waters—was different, for lots of reasons.  It began early in the morning at the Duwamish Longhouse and Cultural Center, where Duwamish chairwoman and elder Cecile Hansen prepped starchy biscuit mix to feed more than 50 mouths for the protest, her glasses soon flecked with flour. Native leaders and participants had traveled from all over to lead kayaktivists in native canoes that day, some coming in from Alaska. And Hansen, who can’t be much more than five feet tall, has been fighting for federal recognition of the Duwamish people for much of her life.”
