Neil Gormley Victory in Leeco Mines Case

Photo: PROGRESS: Earthjustice attorneys and our allies scored a small, but potentially important victory when the court sided with us and temporarily halted a proposed mountaintop removal mine in Kentucky until a final decision could be reached. http://ow.ly/t5MN2

Although that represents some good news, we are still pressing the Army Corps of Engineers to consider health impacts before they issue permits for these destructive projects. Coal production, tax revenue, energy security - all of these so-called benefits are counted, but notice anything missing? NO mention of human health impacts. That is a glaring omission.

EPA publishes emissions rule to GOP’s dismay

January 8, 2014 thehill.com | “The Environmental Protection Agency published its rule limiting carbon emissions from new power plants on Wednesday to the dismay of coal advocates and the GOP.  The proposed rule, published nearly four months after EPA Administrator Gina McCarthy announced it, is a core element of President Obama’s climate change agenda. Included in the new performance standards, the EPA pushes for new coal-fired power plants to be built with carbon capture technology, which Republicans argue is impossible since the technology isn’t ready. McCarthy says the technology is ready and is already being used.”
