Don’t Let This Happen to Your Planet

SAGE III (splash)

March 29, 2013, science.nasa.gov | “Ozone stinks.  People who breathe it gag as their lungs burn.  The EPA classifies ground-level ozone as air pollution.  Yet without it, life on Earth would be impossible.  A fragile layer of ozone 25 km above Earth’s surface is all that stands between us and some of the harshest UV rays from the sun.”

“MONITORING – following through on our environmental agreements.
Don’t Let This Happen to Your Planet – OZONE LAYER – NASA Science

Life as we know it doesn’t thrive on planets without ozone layers, which is why the recovery of Earth’s ozone layer is so important. A new instrument slated for launch to the ISS will monitor our planet’s protective ozone cocoon with greater depth and precision than ever before.”

America’s Greenest House Gets A Family

March 29, 2013, www.care2.com | “People move into new homes every day, but rarely is their relocation covered by international media. But that’s just the fanfare experienced by the Smith family of St. Louis, MO. Of course, the fact that their new home may guide the future design of energy-efficient homes around the world may have something to do with it.”

The Smith’s new dwelling in the St. Louis suburb of Webster Groves is the first Active House in the United States. An ‘Active House’ is energy efficient and all energy needed is supplied by renewable energy sources integrated in the building or from the nearby collective energy system and electricity grid.

Wilson Solar Grill for outdoor cooking

March 28, 2013, www.examiner.com | “A group of MIT students have been working on a solar grill that uses a Fresnel lens and solar energy to melt down a container of Lithium Nitrate, which is like a battery storing thermal energy for 25 hours. The heat created at temperatures above 450 degrees Fahrenheit is used for convection cooking outdoors.”

A solar grill developed by Professor David Wilson at MIT allows users to cook emissions-free day or night. The grill uses a Fresnel lens and solar energy to melt down a container of Lithium Nitrate, which acts as a battery storing thermal energy for up to 25 hours. The stored heat can be used to cook at temperatures above 450ºF.

March 26, 2013, inhabitat.com | “19-year-old Boyan Slat has unveiled plans to create an Ocean Cleanup Array that could remove 7,250,000 tons of plastic waste from the world’s oceans. The device consists of an anchored network of floating booms and processing platforms that could be dispatched to garbage patches around the world. Instead of moving through the ocean, the array would span the radius of a garbage patch, acting as a giant funnel. The angle of the booms would force plastic in the direction of the platforms, where it would be separated from plankton, filtered and stored for recycling.”

The best news is that young people are putting lots of creativity into solving these kinds of problems. Whether this one works, another one will. May the funds to develop these great ideas fully be received!

  • COMMENTS:
Elaine Codling “The most significant questions are whether the funds to deploy these technologies will be available and can any of this clean up faster than the plastic is dumped.” Robert Brothers “~ well said. The more funds available, the faster the mess will be cleaned up. The more awareness available, the less plastic will be used, the less plastic will be dumped.”
