In Rural Kenya, Solar Lanterns Cut Carbon and Help Kids Read

June 26, 2014, www.yesmagazine.org | “Residents of the rural Kenyan village of Oloitokitok used to light their homes at night by burning wood and kerosene. When these fuels ran out, the village was in darkness. Local students had no light to read by, and—because the village is close to a park where lions and elephants live—wildlife wandered into people’s yards, causing frequent clashes.”

Two of wolf OR7'??s pups peak out from a log on the Rogue River-Siskiyou National Forest, June 2, 2014.

June 4, 2014, www.statesmanjournal.com | “These wolves grow up so fast.  After years of wandering more than 3,000 miles through wilds of Oregon and California in search of a mate, the young wolf known as OR-7 is apparently putting down roots and leaving his bachelor days behind.”

Thanks to everyone who worked so hard in the 1980s and 1990s to stop the major roadbuilding and clearcutting, so that these wolves could finally feel at home enough to bring some pups into this world.

Obama Just Did What No Other President Before Him Has Done

June 2, 2014, mic.com | “In a new, major policy decision, Obama will bypass Congress with a plan forcing power plants to cut their emissions by 30% (from 2005 levels) over 15 years. Coal produced an estimated 74% of total CO2 emissions in the U.S. in 2012, compared to other forms of electricity generation like natural gas and petroleum. The plan represents one of the biggest actions taken by the U.S. government — and the biggest taken by any U.S. president — to slow climate change.”
