Hungarians Just Destroyed All Monsanto GMO Corn Fields

August 31, 2015, www.offgridquest.com | “Hungary has taken a bold stand against biotech giant Monsanto and genetic modification by destroying 1000’s of acres of corn found to have been grown with genetically modified seeds, according to Hungary deputy state secretary of the Ministry of Rural Development Lajos Bognar. Unlike many European Union countries, Hungary is a nation where genetically modified (GM) seeds are banned. In a similar stance against GM ingredients, Peru has also passed a 10 year ban on GM foods.”

End Mining Within 100 Feet of Streams

August 28, 2015, action.biologicaldiversity.org | “For decades legal loopholes have allowed coal companies to mine directly through streams, harming imperiled species like the Colorado pikeminnow and eastern hellbender salamander, and poisoning downstream waterways for people.  But at least the federal Office of Surface Mining Reclamation and Enforcement has proposed a new Stream Buffer Zone Rule that would restrict all mining within 100 feet of streams.”

First Nation builds spirited solar project in the heart of Canada’s oil sands

Judge denies attempt to block water release for Klamath salmon

India Built The World’s First Solar-Powered Airport

On Aug. 18, the Cochin International Airport Limited (CIAL)-India’s fourth largest international airport in terms of passenger traffic-commissioned a 12 mega watt (MW) solar power project. The airport already had a 1MW solar power plant, which can produce 4,000 units of electricity daily. With its new solar plant, the airport can now produce 60,000 units of electricity every day, which is more than enough to meet its daily requirement.”

Germany starts move to ban GMO crops: ministry letter

August 24, 2015, www.reuters.com | “Germany has initiated a move to stop the growing of genetically modified crops under new European Union rules, documents seen by Reuters showed on Monday.  German Agriculture Minister Christian Schmidt has informed German state governments of his intention to tell the EU that Germany will make use of new ‘opt-out’ rules to stop GMO crop cultivation even if varieties have been approved by the EU, a letter from the agriculture ministry seen by Reuters shows.”

Norway’s wealth fund expels POSCO, Daewoo Int’l over palm oil holdings

August 18, 2015, news.mongabay.com, | “Norway’s central bank is divesting the country’s $870 billion pension fund of its holdings in four Asian multinationals over rainforest destruction for palm oil in Southeast Asia, the bank announced yesterday.  Two of the companies, steelmaker POSCO and its subsidiary Daewoo International Corp., are headquartered in South Korea. The others, Genting Bhd. and IJM Corp. Bhd., are Malaysian conglomerates.”
