Saving Right Whales? There’s an App for That

Rightwhale

Apr 12, 2012, www.news.discovery.com | “In the North Atlantic, biologists estimate the population of Right Whales to be somewhere north of 400 individuals.  These whales have a habit of swimming slowly and close to the surface, which makes them vulnerable to ship strikes.  To avoid unnecessary whale collisions, NOAA, in association with the National Park Service, the United States Coast Guard, the International Fund for Animal Welfare, and other partners, has produced an app for iPads and iPhones that provides those real-time updates.”

“Very cool use of technology provides real-time updates on whereabouts of endangered whales. The goal is to avoid boating collisions with these peaceful whales.

Beloved Old Street Dog is Rescued Just Before Huge Mudslide

April 12, 2012, www.care2.com | “Everybody in Araras knew Guga the big brown street dog. He was a wily old soul and had been on the streets for years.  Since 1999, Guga roamed the streets and fended for himself. Only his intelligence, his immunity to many diseases and his pure brute strength got him by.”

Hero Saves Turtle at Sea: Thrilling Video Clip

March 18, 2012, www.care2.com | Watch as a man kayaking Oman’s remote southern coast comes upon a sea turtle tangled in a discarded fishing net. Abandoned fishing nets and plastic litter are a huge problem along Oman’s 1,600 kilometers of coastline, especially in the more remote regions that are rarely visited.  While there is so much work to be done to clean the coastal waters and beaches, we can all take heart in this small act of kindness that has set one very grateful turtle on his way.

Personal actions helping individual animals parallel the actions of large groups protecting large areas of habitat. May each inspire more of the other : )”

Ontario sets up salamander superhighway

14 Mar 2012, www.grist.org | The city of Burlington in Ontario has a dwindling population of Jefferson salamanders (colloquially known as “Jeffies”). There are only about 100 left in the area, and Burlington is one of the only places in the province where the Jeffies have to cross a major road to breed. So the city decided to shut down the road for three weeks so the little guys can safely make their way across.

Jefferson salamanders are a threatened species, and the ones in Burlington are of a rare variety found mainly along the Niagara escarpment. So it’s inconvenient that they hibernate on one side of a road that gets 1,500 cars a day, but breed and lay eggs in a pond on the other side. Still, Burlington’s city council has decided — more or less unanimously — that they can’t afford to lose any Jeffies, so the road will be shut down until March 29.

Developer to work for land swap to protect frog

March 9, 2012, www.biologicaldiversity.org | NEW ORLEANS (AP) — A developer has agreed to work toward a land swap that would protect an endangered frog that breeds near a development in Harrison County, Miss.

Only about 100 adult Mississippi gopher frogs live in the wild, with another 1,500 or so in zoos, including New Orleans’ Audubon Zoo.

The exchange would let the development proceed while protecting essential habitat for an endangered species.

Woman Crossed Castle Moat to Rescue Stranded Old Dog

March 9, 2012, www.care2.com | This story begins with our family taking a trip to Puerto Rico during one Easter vacation. We were visiting the castle in San Juan and the tourists were milling around the castle and its moat. I look up and in one of the window sills — the walls of the castle are quite thick — was a dog sitting pressed against the iron rods that were built into the window to prevent access to the castle through the windows. On the other side was the moat, which was deep and ugly and about 20 feet wide. How the dog ever got over there is a question that will never be answered .

Between the moat and us there was a wall of about 4 feet in height. You could walk on the inside of the castle and I went around and found the window where the dog was cowering on the sill but could not reach him because of the iron rods, but I could talk to him, which I did to get him used to my voice. Then I went to the caretaker of the castle trying to make myself understood in Spanish to tell him that there was a dog in distress and if he would help me. But he did not want to do that. He had, however, a ladder, which was long enough to cross from the outside wall over the moat and rest on the window sill, where the dog was sitting. So I put the ladder across and onto the sill and the dog remained still.
