Dutch Guy Was Annoyed By The Trash On His Way To Work So He Did This

April 21, 2015, www.boredpanda.com | “Tommy Kleyn, a guy in the Netherlands, has showed us just how easy it is to volunteer in your community. He cleaned up a heavily polluted waterfront on his way to work, and all he had to do was wake up half an hour earlier every day until the trash was all gone. After he posted the images on Facebook, he even got some help from his friends. All it took was filling up one garbage bag at a time until the work was done!”

Chimpanzees Could Be Treated As ‘Legal Persons’ For First Time

April 20, 2015, www.thedodo.com | “The campaign to free two chimpanzees from a lifetime of biomedical experimentation — and earn them recognition as legal persons — has taken a big step forward.  On Monday, Manhattan Supreme Court Justice Barbara Jaffe issued a summons for Stony Brook University to appear before the court in May. Stony Brook, which is holding the two chimps named Hercules and Leo in its labs, will have to prove that it’s holding the chimps justifiably and that a petition to free them filed by the Nonhuman Rights Project should be turned down.”

Portland Bans Insecticide in Light of Massive Bee Deaths

April 16, 2015, naturalsociety.com | “Portland, Oregon has joined at least seven other cities in banning the usage of neonicotinoids, a class of insecticides that many scientists think is behind colony collapse disorder and the premature death and dysfunction of many bees and other pollinating insects. The ban applies to all city lands and will be enforced despite the opposition of some nearby farmers who claim neonicotinoids are critical for producing their food crops.”

A historic move in the battle to save tropical rainforests

Earth Day Network's photo.

April 1, 2015, www.theguardian.com | “This week a further historic step is taken in the battle to hang on the world’s remaining tropical rainforests. It is unlikely to make too many headlines, but on Friday two countries will take forward the kind of arrangement that many have talked about but few have had the boldness to actually do.  Guyana and Norway’s leadership is seen in the second stage of a ground-breaking deal through which one (Norway) makes annual payments to the other (Guyana) to keep its forests.”
