Universal Support in Rio for Phase-Down of HFCs for Climate Protection

June 25, 2012, www.enn.com | “While Rio+20 was disappointing on many fronts, the efforts to reduce short-lived climate pollutants moved forward with the final declaration, The Future We Want, supporting the phase down of factory-made super-greenhouse gases HFCs.  Further progress came when former President Bill Clinton and New York Mayor Bloomberg announced that their C40 Cities Climate Leadership Group, a coalition of 59 major cities around the world, was joining forces with the Climate and Clean Air Coalition to Reduce Short-Lived Climate Pollutants.”

Town passes gas drilling moratorium

March 14, 2012, www.thedailystar.com | WEST ONEONTA  – The Oneonta Town Board passed a 12-month moratorium on natural gas drilling by a one-vote margin Tuesday night.

The vote took place after a markedly less-charged petitioner’s period than the official public hearing Feb. 13.

Board members William Mirabito and Scott Gravelin voted against the moratorium. Supervisor Robert Wood and board member Janet Hurley-Quackenbush were joined by new board member David Jones — who rode a strong anti-drilling platform to a victory at the polls last November — in voting for it.

The Amazon’s Internet Indians

March 13, 2012, www.aljazeera.com | Amazonia is much more than just the earth’s lungs: it is home to 20 per cent of the world’s fauna, 20 per cent of its fresh water reserves and countless animal species.

In the 1960s and 1970s, Brazil started the conquest of the massive ancient forest in order to increase the country’s prosperity – a people without land moved to a land without people, built roads, dams and cities.

Since then, two million hectares of tropical rainforest have been burned down and cleared in the Amazon every year.  An area approximately the same size as France, 65 million hectares, has now disappeared.

Today, the earth’s largest forest is home to 20 million people: All of them have their own, usually conflicting, ideas about the future development of the Amazon region.
