Sampling the Pacific for Signs of Fukushima

April 2, 2012, www.whoi.edu | “An international research team is reporting the results of a research cruise they organized to study the amount, spread, and impacts of radiation released into the ocean from the tsunami-crippled reactors in Fukushima, Japan.”

“~ Fukushima Radiation Dispersal by Ocean Currents Lowers Concentrations to Below Danger Levels, may take a year or two to cross the Pacific. “Levels . . . ranged from below detection level to levels that, while elevated, remained within standards set for human consumption.”

Women lead protests at Kudankulam nuclear power plant site

March 24, 2012, www.ndtv.com | Kudankulam:  The protests at the Kudankulam nuclear plant show no signs of subsiding. Thousands of villagers, mostly women, continue with their indefinite fast, which entered its sixth day today, at Idinthakarai demanding the scrapping of the nuclear plant project.

The agitation is being led by People’s Movement Against Nuclear Energy (PMANE) coordinator S P Udayakumar.

The protesting women say they fear for the lives of their children and will not allow any work at the nuclear plant. They say that the project poses a huge risk, especially in light of Japan’s Fukushima nuclear plant experience after the tsunami last year.

Germany Embarks on Historic Alternative Energy Push

March 19, 2012, www.commondreams.org – Spurred by a public outcry following the Fukushima nuclear disaster in Japan, Germany’s Prime Minister, Angela Merkel, announced last year that Germany would phase out all of its nuclear power plants. Now, with a looming 20% energy gap to fill, the European nation plans to follow on its early leadership in the green energy sector with an unprecedented investment in alternative and renewable sources, including wind and solar.
The program will cost 200 billion euros ($263 billion), about 8 percent of the country’s gross domestic product in 2011, according to the DIW economic institute in Berlin. And Bloomberg News reports that, “Not since the allies leveled Germany in World War II has Europe’s biggest economy undertaken a reconstruction of its energy market on this scale.”

Thousands form anti-nuclear human chains in Germany, France

March 12, 2012, mdn.mainichi.jp | TOKYO (Kyodo) — Thousands of people formed human chains in Germany and France to protest against the use of nuclear power plants on Sunday, the first anniversary of the March 11 earthquake and tsunami disaster that crippled the Fukushima nuclear power plant, while protesters also gathered at antinuclear rallies in New York and California.

At least 24,000 people, holding torches, formed an 80-kilometer long human chain in areas near Braunschweig in Germany, which has decided to abandon nuclear power plants by the end of 2022, according to an organizer. The chain encircled three nuclear facilities including a temporary storage site for nuclear waste in the vicinity of the city.

Robert Brothers “ideas are good news, facts are better. The fact mentioned here is that “Gomphidius glutinosus has been reported to absorb – via the mycelium – and concentrate radioactive Cesium 137 more than 10,000-fold over ambient background levels. Many other mycorrhizal mushroom species also hyper-accumulate.” The best news would be results of the use of these species, in terms of how long it takes for how many of them to absorb how much radiaation. Would anyone like to research this, using the sources that Stamets gives?”

Germany to shut down pre-1980 nuclear plants

March 15, 2011, www.reuters.com | ” Germany will shut down all seven of its nuclear power plants that began operating before 1980 at least till June, the government said on Tuesday, leaving open whether they will ever start up again after Japan’s crisis.

Chancellor Angela Merkel announced the closures, which will leave only 10 nuclear stations still generating, under a nuclear policy moratorium imposed as Japan faced a potential catastrophe at its earthquake-crippled Fukushima complex.”
