EPA Finalizes Standards to Protect Fish, Aquatic Life from Cooling Water Intakes

May 19, 2014, yosemite.epa.gov | “The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) today finalized standards to protect billions of fish and other aquatic life drawn each year into cooling water systems at large power plants and factories. This final rule is required by the Clean Water Act to address site-specific challenges, and establishes a common sense framework, putting a premium on public input and flexibility for facilities to comply.”

At last, some FANTASTIC news for our Great Barrier Reef! Construction giant Lend Lease has announced its withdrawal from the biggest proposed coal port in this World Heritage Area!

In recent years, Rio Tinto and BHP Billiton have done the same. We’ve still got a long way to go to protect our Reef and climate from plans to expand coal exports through the Reef, but this is another sign that companies should move away from Reef wrecking projects.

Palau to ban commercial fishing and become a marine sanctuary “roughly the size of France”

Palau marine reserve

February 10, 2014, www.treehugger.com | “History buffs will be familiar with Palau, an island country in the Pacific ocean with a population of about 20,000 people spread across 250 islands, because of the battle of Peleliu, one of the major engagements on the Pacific front between the imperial troops of Japan and the U.S. Marines. But that’s the past. These days, Palau is making headlines for much more peaceful reasons: President Tommy Remengesau Jr. has declared the Pacific nation will ban commercial fishing.”

IMPRESSIVE: Palau was once the site of a fierce WWII battle between Japan and the US, but the island nation is now making headlines for a more joyous occasion: it will become the first nation in the world to ban commercial fishing and become a giant marine sanctuary the size of France. http://ow.ly/tuvpo

“We have no choice – the ocean is our way of life,” says President Remengesau. “It’s our livelihood, it’s our culture, it’s our economy.” Palau will promote sustainable forms of eco-tourism such as snorkeling and scuba diving within its territorial waters, in lieu of large scale commercial fishing.

Coho salmon back in Humboldt Bay tribs

February 10, 2014, www.facebook.com | “In 2002 a team of fish-passers celebrated the removal of a small perched culvert with a large passable one. Immediately, coho salmon re-colonized the creek. On Saturday, February 8th, after just over an inch of rain, the creek finally rose high enough for fish to swim up.”

“After the drought in northern California, the rains bring in the salmon!

Ultraviolet nets significantly reduce sea turtle bycatch

November 12, 2013, www.enn.com | “Bycatch, a side-effect of commercial fishing in which non-target species are accidentally caught, is linked to severe population declines in several species. Sea turtles are particularly impacted by small-scale coastal gillnetting practices, in which large nets are deployed and indiscriminately snag anything of a certain size that attempts to swim through them. However, that may soon change. ”
