Bear hair study in Banff proves animal highway crossings work

Banff Wildlife Overpass

August 11, 2013, www.hcn.org | “For three years, researchers from Montana State University spent their summers collecting bear hair. The samples, collected on both sides of the 50 mile stretch of the Trans-Canada Highway that cuts through Banff National Park, prove what the researchers had suspected: wildlife underpasses and bridges were helping enough bears move back and forth across the highway to keep the populations healthy.”

“Over the three-year study, 15 different grizzly bears and 17 different black bears used the crossings, avoiding risk of being hit by motor vehicles.

Keystone XL May Actually Raise American Gas Prices

July 21, 2013, www.care2.com | “Let’s get real for a second.  I’m so sick of politicians, industry lackeys and uninformed citizens who tell me that opposing the Keystone XL is tantamount to sabotaging the American economy.  These pro-fossil-fuel parrots go on and on about how they would drill for oil in their own front yards it if meant cheaper gas at the pump. These people act as though cheap gas were some sort of unalienable right or the sole factor in determining America’s success or failure.”

The chief purpose of the pipeline is to help Canada increase it’s own oil revenues, not to give Americans cheaper gas.

Shale gas revolution has curtailed U.S. carbon dioxide emissions

April 22, 2013, www.usatoday.com | “Year after year, we are treated to a message of environmental doom and gloom and admonitions on Earth Day. On the back of this sentiment in wealthy countries, governments have invested billions of dollars in inefficient, feel-good policies such as subsidizing solar panels and electric cars.  But there are far better ways to improve environmental prospects for humanity and our planet.”

The Warbler vs. the Willits Bypass

Feb 13, 2013, www.huffingtonpost.com | “For decades, the Federal Highway Administration and the California Department of Transportation (CalTrans) have been pursuing a freeway bypass on Highway 101 around the town of Willits in Northern California. For decades, the townsfolk have been suggesting simpler, less costly, and less destructive alternatives. With word that a large-scale cutting of trees could begin on January 28, 2013, a 24 year-old local woman, calling herself the Warbler, climbed into a large ponderosa pine tree slated for removal.”
